About SHA-256
SHA-256 is part of the SHA-2 family designed by the NSA and published by NIST. It produces a 256-bit (64 hex character) hash and has no known practical collisions, which is why it secures TLS certificates, software releases, Git signing and Bitcoin.
To verify a download, compare the SHA-256 shown by the publisher with the one computed here — a single changed byte produces a completely different hash.
Why it matters that this runs locally
Many online developer tools send what you paste to a server — risky when it contains API keys, session tokens, customer data or proprietary code. This tool runs entirely in your browser: open your browser's Network tab and you will see that nothing you type is sent anywhere.

- Is my data sent to a server?
- No. Everything runs in your browser, so tokens, keys, passwords and other sensitive data you paste never leave your device.
