Aspect ratios explained
| Ratio | Where it's used |
|---|---|
| 1:1 | Instagram feed, profile pictures, product photos |
| 4:5 | Instagram portrait posts |
| 3:2 | DSLR photos, 4×6 prints |
| 16:9 | YouTube, presentations, widescreen |
| 9:16 | Stories, Reels, TikTok, Shorts |
Cropping for social media
Instagram shows feed posts at up to 4:5 in portrait, so 4:5 photos take up the most screen space. Stories and Reels are 9:16; anything wider gets bars or is cropped automatically by the app, often cutting off faces — cropping yourself keeps control of the frame.
