To extract text from an image, drop a photo, screenshot or scan in, choose its language and press Extract text. OCR runs in your browser and the recognised text appears ready to copy or download as a .txt file.
How to extract text from an image
- Drop an image into the box above (or paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V / ⌘V).
- Choose the language of the text.
- Press Extract text, then copy the result or download it.
Tips for accurate text recognition
- Crop the image to just the text — margins, photos and logos confuse OCR.
- Text should be at least 20 pixels tall; zoom in before taking a screenshot of small print.
- Straighten tilted photos with Rotate & Flip first.
- Choose the correct language; for mixed Hindi–English documents keep "Also English" ticked.

Frequently asked questions
- Which languages are supported?
- More than 100, including English, Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Arabic, Russian, Chinese, Japanese and Korean. Each language's data downloads the first time you use it.
- How can I get better results?
- Use a sharp, well-lit image where the text is large and straight. Crop away everything except the text, and pick the correct language.
- Can it read handwriting?
- Neat handwriting sometimes works, but OCR is designed for printed text, so expect mistakes on handwritten notes.
- Are my files uploaded to a server?
- No. This tool runs entirely in your browser, so your files never leave your device and nothing is stored on our servers. It even keeps working if you go offline after the page has loaded.
