Frequently asked questions

How do I remove GST from a total?
Divide the GST-inclusive amount by (1 + rate/100). For ₹1,180 at 18%: 1180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000 before GST, and the GST is ₹180.
What are the current GST rates?
Since 22 September 2025 most goods and services fall in the 5% or 18% slabs, with 40% for luxury and "sin" goods; the earlier 12% and 28% slabs were folded into these. Some items carry special rates (for example 3% on gold) or are exempt. Check the CBIC website for a specific item.
What is the difference between CGST, SGST and IGST?
For sales within a state, GST is split equally between the Centre (CGST) and the State (SGST). For sales between states, the full GST is collected as IGST.
