or choose files · paste with Ctrl+V · JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, AVIF
To compress an image, drop JPG, PNG or WebP files in, choose a quality (80% is a good balance) and press Compress. Photos are re-encoded with MozJPEG and PNGs optimised with OxiPNG in your browser, typically saving 40–80% with no visible difference.
How to compress images
- Drop one or more images into the box above (JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC).
- Pick a quality — lower means smaller files. PNGs are optimised losslessly unless you choose to convert them.
- Press Compress, compare the before and after sizes, and download each file or a ZIP.
How image compression works
Photos are re-encoded with MozJPEG, an improved JPEG encoder that produces files 10–30% smaller than standard encoders at the same visual quality. PNGs are optimised losslessly with OxiPNG, which rewrites the file more efficiently without changing a single pixel.
Quality 80% is the sweet spot for most photos: the file shrinks dramatically while differences are invisible at normal viewing size. Go to 60–70% for thumbnails, and use the Max size option to shrink dimensions as well — halving the width cuts the file to roughly a quarter.
Common image size limits
| Where | Typical limit* | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Exam & government form photo | 20–50 KB, JPG | Use Target size; crop to the requested shape first |
| Signature upload | 10–20 KB, JPG | Crop tightly to the signature on white paper |
| Job portal profile photo | ≤ 100–200 KB | Square crop, 400–600 px wide |
| Email attachment | ≤ 1–2 MB per photo | 1920 px wide at 80% quality |
| Website / blog image | ≤ 100–200 KB | WebP at 1600 px wide |

Frequently asked questions
- How much smaller will my images get?
- Typical phone photos shrink by 50–80% at 80% quality with no visible difference. PNG screenshots usually shrink by 10–40% losslessly; converting them to WebP often saves much more.
- How do I compress an image to a specific size like 100 KB?
- Lower the quality step by step and check the new size after compressing. If the image is still too big, make it smaller in pixels first with the Image Resizer — halving the width cuts the file size by roughly three-quarters.
- Does compression remove metadata?
- Yes. Location, camera and other EXIF data are removed, which also protects your privacy when you share photos.
- Are my files uploaded to a server?
- No. This tool runs entirely in your browser, so your files never leave your device and nothing is stored on our servers. It even keeps working if you go offline after the page has loaded.
